I passed a sports equipment store today, and saw a lovely croquet set in the window. I longed to buy it for my very own, until reason stopped me: "Where?" I suddenly thought, "will I put all the flamingos?"

I had a vision of a bevy of 6- and 8-year-old boys in sailor suits and caps, running around on a lawn at dusk, whacking balls in front of an English cottage...but since I do not have a cottage, sailor suits, or little boys, I kept walking.

Posted by: funkefreak at 9.06.05 16:04I will play the song for you upon my arrival in Oxford.

I have two memories of croquet, yea, even three.
First, as a little girl reading "Alice in Wonderland."
Second, as a little girl playing with 5N on the Carter Hall lawn.
Third, as a little girl watching serious competitors on smooth, impeccablely trimmed lawns, not a nanometer of tilt to the surface, practicing beneath the rooms C.S. Lewis once occupied...
