Not quite rear-ended...

I was nearly in an accident this morning (although, I'm sure we could use that word "nearly" to describe every moment of our lives...see Jonathan Edwards' sermon "Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God"....so I suppose this is simply one time I was actually acutely aware of the fact).

I was approaching an intersection in the left lane (Barnes and Powers, for any CS residents out there) when the light turned yellow. I stopped. The delivery truck behind me was not so lucky. Besides the fact the truck was tail-gating me somewhat, the truck's brakes were not in very good condition, and the driver was not ready for any sudden maneuvers. A lot of screeching behind me. The truck manages to pull over into the right lane and stops almost in the middle of the intersection, smoke pouring from the wheels. He changes his mind and just continues through the now red light. The delivery truck's sudden lane change would have been fine in most circumstances, but in this case, his move was complicated by the presence of a mack truck already occupying the space delivery truck needed. Mack truck comes to a halt at light, and driver honks horn profusely. I start to wilt in my car, thinking he is angry at me. Mack truck driver opens door. He steps out. I am about ready to cry. He walks up to intersection and starts waving hands. Apparently, he wanted the delivery truck driver's attention, but that vehicle was already long gone. I breathe a sigh of relief. Not my fault after all. The light changes. We continue on. I realize what a disaster that episode could have been and am incredibly thankful.
