Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days of Summer (those days of soda, and pretzels, and beer)

Such a full weekend. Besides being somewhat disappointed by Flaming Lips, I also attended a wedding on Saturday. As is the case with most Forestgate weddings, we've known the central character (in this instance the groom) since he was three or four. And when he and the bride return from their Hawaiian honeymoon, he commences working as a full-time employee for my dad. Perhaps because I've seen these friends progress through most of the stages of their lives, Forestgate weddings have the power to make me particularly nostaligic. The bride is beautiful, inside and out, and I am most happy for the couple. The wedding was simple but elegant, and the reception featured an open bar and lots of dancing. I tried my mom's Tequila Sunrise, which pleasantly surprised me as a drink consisting mostly of fruit juice with just enough alcohol to give it a nice kick. But the drink gets its name from the yellow and red swirls created by the different juices, and so I really just wanted to look at it and not drink it at all.

The dance music drew from a variety of genres: swing, disco, line dances. These genres allow the maximum dancing to all participants, simply because most do not require a partner (or at least allow for single dancers to do some creative free-styling). In a setting where one normally finds 90 girls for every guy, the potential for single dancing is a must. And I like single dancing. One can be as spontaneous as one likes and not worry about tripping over people's toes. If one is in fact uncoordinated, she can be uncoordinated at her own peril.

The last wedding I attended involved lots of dance-friendly guests and dance-friendly music, but we never really acheived the critical mass we needed to get people off their seats. What makes a wedding reception cross that line between watching three people look dumb while everyone else sits and dancing comfortably while only three people sit down for a breather?

The D.J.

It could have had something to do with the D. J. Or it could have had something to do with the presence of an open bar. Or it could just be that this particular group of guests was on the average rather fond of dancing to begin with.
