an eccentric man is hard to find

Share with God's people who are in need. Practice hospitality. Romans 12:13

I am so often the recipient of hospitality at my church here in Hamilton. Regular between church-and-bible study dinners at Corrinne's place. And today supper at the DeJongs.

And encouragement to go to Bible Study:

J: Sarah, are you coming to make cards with us?
S: Um.....[I was planning on skipping, but since my invite to supper, I was waffling in my decision.]
J: We need more girls because they are so good at being artistic.
S: Yes, but how do you know I am one of "those girls" who is good at being artistic?
J: You're wearing a beret. You must have some aesthetic flair.

How can one refuse such utter confidence in one's abilities?

But I was glad I went: we formed a society of not-quite-dead-yet poets. And so we filled the thank you cards with verse inspired by nothing in particular except a plate of very good brownies.

One member of our group is a dead-ringer for Niles Crane. "Has anyone seen the glitter glue?" he sighed with resignation. "I am about to do something atrociously tacky." And then proceeded to rattle off the rhyming scheme for both English and Italian sonnets, for the poets' benefit. To paraphrase Flannery O'Conner, "An eccentric man is hard to find." I feel that eccentricity makes life more colorful, but hesitate making too much of it lest I turn friends into a freak show. But this particular eccentric is well-beloved by the group. And even though none of us could write an Italian sonnet if our lives depended on it, we appreciated his thoughtful contribution to our verse-crafting efforts.

And more grief for my beret. One fellow stole this item from atop my head, placing it on his own. He looked the part, pipe in hand, striped shirt. All he lacked was a cafe and a copy of The Stranger.

And I accidentally scraped my car against a picnic table in the dark. There is a small scratch where metal met metal. The fencers would say my car has been christened (they scratch all their new equipment as soon as they get it to avoid worrying about the inevitable scratches that come later).
